About Me:
I opened my Etsy shop in March of 2007. It is a part-time venture for me, but I have recently made a commitment to focus more on my craft, my Etsy store, and my involvement in the Etsy community. You can read more about me and I got started in jewelry making by reading my profiles in my Etsy store or on my blog. I'm a proud member of etsyBEAD street team, the PMC Guild, and SRJAD.

I have four children, three grown daughters (one married, one engaged), a son still at home, and two grandchildren. My husband is a Karate instructor and has been involved in martial arts for over 30 years. My full-time job is in nursing home management, and I'm responsible for seven nursing facilities which are spread across Illinois.

We are pretty-much homebodies (hey, why leave home when you can make jewelry?) and are TV, internet, movie and music junkies. I don't know what we would do without our TIVO!

Have you heard of SMIDGE?

I found a great new site for crafters and craft lovers! It is (drum roll please.....) SMIDGE! Not only does it offer a monthly contest to win free prizes, is it a networking site, and can help crafters shamelessly and not so shamelessly promote their business.

In the month of July, SMIDGE is offering a chance to win a prize valued at over $200 in handmade items. You can have multiple chances to win, simply by visiting a designated shop and making a comment. Here's are sample items from the current contest.

Although SMIDGE is a fairly new site, it has established its purpose well, and the administration and participants seem to be enthusiastic, fresh, and professional. SMIDGE's mission is clearly stated and the instructions for participation and recognition are clear. If you are a crafter, give SMIDGE a try. If you know a crafter, give SMIDGE a plug. Through it, I already found out about a networking group just a short distance from where I live and I've already contacted them to see how I might get involved. And there are ways to get directly involved with SMIDGE itself. If you have a smidge of fear, muster up a smidge of courage and join the ranks of smidgies. I think you'll be smitten with SMIDGE.

What You Love! Take the Survey!

I'm offering a chance to win free earrings by simply participating in my survey at the top of my blog. It's easy peasy. Just tell me what type of jewelry you love and then sign the comment section below this post with a way to contact you if you win (remember, information is public). I will use the comments as entries. Feel free to provide more detail about the type of jewelry you like to wear in your comments. When the survey is over, I will contact the winner to get shipment details! Thanks - and good luck!

Clean Edges

Have you ever felt there were times in your life when things aren't exactly like you want them to be?

I was taking my walk tonight and realized that I get a feeling of serenity when I see a well-manicured yard, one where the edges are sharp around the sidewalks, and the garden is neatly contained by some type of edging. As I approached my own house I realized that my yard is full of raggedy edges, much like parts of my life. Several people I know have recently lost children, my mother is facing another battle with cancer, and I realize that I'm no longer "needed" like I used to be by my adult children. There are the rough edges of relationships, rough edges of the lines on my face, and the rough edges in any given day (the train that makes you late, the meal that doesn't turn out the way you envisioned it, or playing phone tag with someone you really need to talk to.) It's the rough edges of life that make us feel out of sync.

Whether the raggedy edges of my yard are a symptom, or a symbol, I'm not sure, but I decided to take matters into my literal own hands tonight. Instead of wishing for clean edges in my yard, I put tools in hand and began attacking my rough edges. The edging tool I used was a little rusty and was hard to push at first. Much like everything else I attempt, edging my walk had its own "rough edges" and I realized that the process was a test of my will to simply get the job done. After the aged rubber fell off on one wheel, and rolling the tool enough times to loosen the rust that had settled over the winter, the tool began to work as I became determined to not let it get the best of me. First I went along the brick edge of the sidewalk. Then along the little walking path from the driveway to the porch. And then along the curved edge near the flower garden.

Once the rough edges were gone, I stood back to admire my work. Ahhhhh, clean edges!

And then I noticed the weeds. So I started at one end and began pulling out the weeds. First the tall ones. Then the bright green ones. Then the little short ones that weren't noticeable until the others were gone.

And when I stepped back, I felt so much better. (Not to mention the edges were clean and the weeds were gone with just a little determination and a little elbow grease.) Sorry to say I got a blister on my hand because I did not wear gloves, but that is a welcome reminder of the work I did to achieve a little satisfaction. No pain, no gain, right?

Now, for the rough edges in other places of my life: Perhaps if I put the same grit and determination into fostering change... or acceptance (depending on the circumstances), I can smooth the rough edges. And maybe I need to pull a few weeds so that I can see the garden of opportunity that awaits me each day. Opportunity to live a life full of satisfaction, no matter what the circumstances are, knowing that the rough edges are only a temporary distraction from a glorious existence.

Tomorrow, when I return from my walk, I'm going to take notice of my own well-manicured yard and be grateful for another day given to me by my creator.

The Patina Queen

Minimum orders are often hard to meet when you are an individual jewelry designer purchasing components. I was dismayed when one of my suppliers raised its minimum order to a level I simply cannot afford. It seemed like a black cloud was hanging over my head because it was one of my absolute favorite places to do business. However, every cloud has a silver lining and this one was no different. Just by happenstance I came across the "Patina Queen" an Etsy-selling-sister like myself. I had never bought any patinaed components before, but was intrigued by her pictures and descriptions. Well, let me tell you, the pictures do not do her components justice! I placed a small order (no minimum, thank you!) and was absolutely stunned when I opened my shipment. The pieces are absolutely beautiful! The polished brass, just peeks through and adds a subtle touch of glimmer. I highly recommend other jewelry designers who like to design with nature or vintage-esque pieces to check out this Etsy seller. Delivery was quick and our communications were pleasant. I don't think you will be disappointed. I can't wait to design with them, but they are so special, I'm going to treasure them for myself for just a little longer. And may I say, with pun intended, "Long Live the Queen!"

The Little Pork Chops That Could

My last post discussed the bad news we were delivered last week. In the midst of trying to take care of my immediate family, the news we had received was churning in the back of my mind. But, as life goes on, I attempted to have a normal evening.

This evening began with a request from my son for Shake 'n Bake pork chops. He loves them. They are our family's comfort food - always has been. So, without adieu, I drove up to the Karate studio to tell Rick that I was going to fix Shake 'n Bake. He was somewhat relieved, because even though he enjoys cooking on the grill, on Karate nights it is difficult to get dinner on at a reasonable hour. I told him dinner would be ready at 8:30. I was overjoyed that he was overjoyed with my proposal, so I left the studio and went to the store to get the chops and Shake 'n Bake.

Well, in the midst of getting things going for supper and pre-heating the oven, I remembered that I had wanted to price new cell phones. Mine isn't working well, and I'm eligible for a free upgrade (been waiting for two years for that!!). So I got on-line, and at 8:30 when Rick walked in he says in a happy, almost grateful voice, "MMMMmmmmmm, something smells good!"

"Oh Sh--! I am so sorry!" I leap up from my chair only to realize I had not even started the chops and the good smell he smelled was apparently old crusties in the bottom of the oven, and the oven had no pork chops in it! Only slightly irritated, he said we could put the chops in the oven and go take our walk while they baked. Great idea! So I got the chops ready, told Richie to keep an eye on the dinger and if they weren't back, to take them out of the oven.

We took our nightly walk and when we got home, Rick says, "MMMMMMmmmmmm, something smells good!"

"Yes it does! Are they done?" I asked Richie.

"Dunno."

We went into the kitchen. They were out on the counter. Must be done, I thought, and as I got closer I realized I HAD NEVER PUT THEM IN!!!!

"You have got to be f-ing kidding me!" Rick says.

I thought to myself that those little crusties can really fool you -- whatever smelled good was still just the empty oven.

Well, by this time, I'm very embarrassed. This isn't the first cooking fiasco I've been a part of. But he grit his teeth, smiled and said, "Oh well, we can watch a show while they cook." Understand it is now about 9:20.

So, I re-set the timer, stuck the chops in the oven, and we went to watch our show. When the dinger dang, up I went to get our delicious pork chops out of the oven and to my horror (yes, HORROR!), I realized when I set the timer I turned off the oven!

"YOU ARE F-ING KIDDING ME!"

"Wish I was."

So once again, I turned on the oven and was subsequently banned from the kitchen for the rest of the evening.

Who knows exactly why the pork chops were such a disaster, except that this time I really did have a good reason, unlike other incidents of ineptness in the kitchen. Yes, this time I was distracted by my mother's health.

We did finally eat our supper at about 10:45. I was so happy he didn't hold a grudge. He let me in the kitchen the following evening, totally in charge: of salads!

What is EUFA?

I recently joined a great Street Team of filigree artists... specifically Etsy United Filigree Artists. It's a great group of designers who love to work with filigree and vintage-esque components. There are a occasional themes challenges and the work that is put out by the group is stunning. I invite you to all to come see what the EUFA members have designed and to visit their shops. A complete listing of EUFA members is on the blog. Of course, yo…

Business is Blooming and Blossoming!

I just received word that one of our local flower shops has accepted my proposal for carrying my jewelry. I'm so excited and we worked out a sweet deal! The name of the shop is "Blooms & Blossoms" in Carlinville, my home town. It has been difficult to find a local establishment to carry my jewelry because there just aren't any shopping places (besides Wal-Mart) anymore! It's really sad to see a town you have lived in all your life start to dry-up. The mine recently closed (but I hear that…

Too bad your DH didn't like your home decorated in folkart. I'm lucky that mine lets me do whatever I want. As long as the house is clean, he doesn't care how I decorate it. I wish I could do it all in prim but that's not possible so I just add a few things here and there. I was thinking I would add some photos of my bedroom and dining room - where most of my items are displayed.

Hey Janet - glad to find another LOST fan! Thursday nights just don't get here fast enough, lol. I'm really going to hate it when the show has to end. :(
My DH doesn't watch it - so it's a good thing we have 2 TVs!
