Unusual Vintage Needle Holder?

The most unusual item I've listed this week is a vintage wooden needle holder? The elderly lady who sold it to me at her estate sale said this mystery wood necklace was used to hold needles while sewing.

I like the clay painted and glass beads that hang from it.
