Hmmmm, got tired of seeing that little box that said I didn't have any discussions started yet. :) Decided to start one. Anyone want to discuss colors? I've been trying to figure out what's hot, what's not. I heard orange, then not orange, purple, then not purple. I gravitate to blues and greens myself.

Yep, I've been checking the trends sites. Sometimes what's a trend in design isn't to likeable for so many! I remember years that it was very difficult to purchase because the color combos were all set to young adults and so many of my friends went through lean clothing years too because of it. :) A friend of mine told me black is in at many stores this year.

I think it's helpful Beate, just confirms that we're not all cookie cutters and we all have our own preferences. So, I don't need to worry about color, although I'll still wonder. And, now my discussion box isn't reminding me that I haven't started any discussions. Thank you!

Green is good! Michael Kors is using green for spring/summer. And purple. And watermelon (not sure that's what they call it).

In my business, I need to be concerned with color. I used to look at Vogue to help determine the colorway I use, but I found that was to forward for the typical buyer of my jewelry. Now I use InStyle and Elle to guide me. I also check out Elle's website and look at the "ready-to-wear" runway shows to see what will be at market that retailers will be buying.

Pantone publishes the color report, but the free one is usually a bit too late to plan for the season. Usually by the time Pantone makes its report available, the markets have already happened. You can subscribe to Pantone and get the reports ahead of time, but it's expensive. So I watch for the runway shows to give me a heads up on what will be hitting the retail stores 6 months down the road.

Hillary, I peeked at your shop and can understand why it's important for you to watch the color trends. You would want to coordinate with what's coming out. Wow, you have intricate work, I can't imagine how long some of those pieces would take to make! Do you ever get any surprises about color that you weren't expecting?

Hi Kate ... I just saw your note to me. I've been buried under with all the marketing to get my Etsy shop off the ground! But yes, surprises happen all the time. Usually when I have a mess on my table and some items end up laying side-by-side in the chaos. I see the combo and get one of those "Eureka!" moments. And they usually sell at the next show.

I have a couple coming out for spring. I'm trying to figure the best place for my spring roll out. Etsy isn't doing anything for me, and the website takes a long time to build and get to the top of the Google heap. I'll probably preview on my blog and on Flickr.

Well, color is pretty important tome, but it is moreso with what I think Mom's will want to put on their babies. The toddlers/bigger kids are wearing the latest Gymbo lines, so I need to somehow coordinate with those. The teeny ones run the gammut - some are wearing custom clothing, so i need to use designer fabrics (ie Michael Miller, Amy Butler, et. al.) or, they are matching the latest clothing from Carters layettes. Around the holidays, I try to just be whimsical, and go with what i point at and say.......AWWWWWWWWW!!! I LOVE that fabric. Oh wait. That would be All the fabric. Oops.

I have a little theary on colour, but its based more on a day to day colour, I've even kept a record of it. I noticed that some days I would sell mainly reds, and another day mainly browns and orange, then another day greens. (this is dispite what colours are in for the season). I also noticed that some days I really had an urge to wear lets say red, then another day black. etc. I came up with a solution, that dependant on where the moon was in the astrological signs, was a good indication of what colours should be worn, or indeed what the chances where of selling that colour, to date after about three years of studying this (simply by keeping record of my sales and where the moon is) I'd say it;s worked about 75% of the time. So to summerise if the moon is in Aries - (which is the planet of Mars - which represents Red) It is likely that I will sell mostly reds that day.
I hope this doesn't sound to 'out there'. It has worked for me as a guide..promise.

Right now I love love love a pastel yellow and light gray. I think they look awesome together. It mixes a little winter and spring together.
